Self-Will Run Riot:
This phrase comes from chapter 5 of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous,
“Selfishness- self-centeredness! That, we think, is the root of our troubles…. So our troubles, we think, are basically of our own making. They arise out of ourselves, and the alcoholic is an extreme example of self-will run riot, though he usually doesn’t think so. Above everything, we alcoholics must be rid of this selfishness. We must, or it kills us!”
The only solution we know is to work the 12 Steps.

The symptoms of alcohol-ism are many and varied. However some are very common across most alcoholics and so into recovery.
For example depression is common while drinking and in recovery. Narcissism is common while drinking but lessens when one works the program.
Fear is suffered by all alcoholics and has a lot to do with ‘self-will run riot’. Fear of being found out, fear of vulnerability, fear of insecurity and many others.
As an oldtimer in sobriety ,my experience has been that self will run riot is still very visible among fellow oldtimers in AA!Not having the humility to treat every other member with RESPECt and EQUALITY is what is preventing the program from working like it should.
